Creating Emotional Safety
The foundation that makes everything else possible.
Emotional safety is the feeling that you can be vulnerable without being attacked, dismissed, or abandoned. It's the prerequisite for deep connection.
Signs of emotional safety: • You can share fears without judgment • Mistakes are met with understanding, not contempt • Disagreements don't threaten the relationship • You feel chosen, not tolerated
Signs of emotional unsafety: • Walking on eggshells • Hiding parts of yourself • Fear of bringing up concerns • Emotional withdrawal after vulnerability
Building safety: 1. Respond to bids for connection — When your partner reaches out, engage 2. Validate before problem-solving — "That sounds really hard" before "Here's what you should do" 3. Protect their vulnerabilities — Never weaponize what they share 4. Consistent warmth — Safety comes from predictability
When safety is lost: If trust has been broken, rebuilding safety takes time and consistent action. Words matter less than patterns.
The goal: Your partner should be the person you run TO with problems, not FROM.
