Supporting Your Partner Through Stress
How to be helpful when your partner is overwhelmed.
When your partner is stressed, your response can either draw you closer or push you apart.
What stressed partners need: Most people need to feel heard before they want solutions. Ask: "Do you want me to listen, or help problem-solve?"
The wrong moves: • Jumping straight to advice • Minimizing: "It's not that bad" • Competing: "You think that's stressful? Let me tell you about MY day" • Taking it personally when they're short-tempered
The right moves: • Create space to vent without judgment • Offer practical help: "Can I take anything off your plate?" • Physical comfort if welcomed • Patience with mood changes
Protecting the relationship: Stress often causes people to withdraw or snap. Have a signal or phrase that means "I'm overwhelmed, not mad at you."
Self-care for the supporter: You can't pour from an empty cup. Supporting a stressed partner is draining. Make sure you're also getting support elsewhere.
The goal: Be the calm in their storm, not another source of pressure.
