The Rules of Fighting Fair
Conflict is normal — how you fight determines your relationship health.
Happy couples don't avoid conflict; they navigate it constructively. Here are ground rules that protect the relationship during disagreements.
The fundamentals: • No contempt — Eye-rolling, mockery, and disgust are relationship poison • No stonewalling — If you need a break, say "I need 20 minutes" and come back • No character attacks — Critique behavior, not personality • Stay in the present — Don't bring up every past grievance • Take breaks — When heart rates exceed 100 BPM, rational discussion stops
Starting soft: How you begin a conversation predicts how it will end. Start with "I feel..." not "You always..."
The 5:1 ratio: Research shows stable couples maintain five positive interactions for every negative one, even during conflict.
Repair attempts: Small bids to de-escalate — humor, affection, an apology — matter more than perfect conflict resolution.
After the fight: Return to the topic when calm. Ask: "What did we learn? What do we do differently next time?"
