Repair After Conflict
How to reconnect after an argument without sweeping things under the rug.
Every couple argues. What separates thriving relationships from struggling ones is how they repair afterward.
The 24-hour window: Aim to attempt repair within 24 hours. The longer you wait, the harder walls become to break down.
Steps to repair: 1. Cool down first — You can't repair while flooded with emotion 2. Take responsibility — Even if it's just 10% of the conflict 3. Express vulnerability — "I felt scared/hurt/unheard when..." 4. Ask about their experience — "How did you feel during our argument?" 5. Identify one thing to do differently — Small, specific changes
What to avoid: • Demanding an apology before giving one • Relitigating the original argument • "I'm sorry you feel that way" (not a real apology)
A repair script: "I've been thinking about our argument. I felt [emotion] and I think I reacted by [behavior]. I'm sorry for [specific thing]. Can we talk about what happened for you?"
